We completed a six-session study Jesus and Possessions by Margot Starbuck during Lent. In Jesus and Possessions, we pondered our attachment to possessions; grappled with the question, "how much is enough?"; and explored the risks and consequences of being too attached to possessions. Below is a brief summary for each session:
March 12th. Session 2: "Maybe Enough Is Really Enough."
We discussed these questions in small groups:
February 26th. Session 1: "Worrying about Enough." The author says these questions are deep-seated worries of the human heart:
- March 19: Session 3: "The Risk of More-Than-Enough" of Jesus and Possessions. John Field leads.
- March 26: Session 4: "Releasing Our More-than-Enough" of Jesus and Possessions. Jayne Johnson leads.
- April 2: Session 5: "Enough for Others" of Jesus and Possessions. Mary Jane Horr leads.
- April 9: Session 6: "Practices of Giving" of Jesus and Possessions
March 12th. Session 2: "Maybe Enough Is Really Enough."
We discussed these questions in small groups:
- When we speak to God, what do we talk about?
- What words do we use - formal or casual?
- Do we talk about ourselves or talk about God?
- Baby Step. Start a conversation. Post on Facebook, “I have enough.” Print the t-shirt. Get the tattoo. Engage others in what you’re discovering.
- Toe-in-the-Water. When you go to the grocery store this week, buy just what you need. Resist buying ten boxes of cereal on sale, meat for the freezer, indulgent desserts, and diet sodas. A week later ask, “Did I have enough?”
- All In. Have a conversation with someone you trust who is sharing your journey—a spouse, a friend you trust, maybe even grown children—about the areas in which you have more than enough. Then make an action plan in response to Jesus’ invitation to live from enough.
February 26th. Session 1: "Worrying about Enough." The author says these questions are deep-seated worries of the human heart:
- Does God notice me?
- Does God care for me?
- Will God meet my needs?
- Baby step. Decide to embrace the reality that God cares for you.
- Toe-in-the-Water. Take a walk through your neighborhood. Look down and look up, noticing the natural world that God sustains.
- All-in. Agree God has provided "enough" for you. Opt out of "extras" this week: desserts, sodas, alcohol, coffee, or other something else you enjoy but can live without.
